A brief history

A6M2_5349

On the 19th Feb 1942, 188 Japanese planes were launched against the Australian city of Darwin. It was the largest Japanese attack since the bombing of Pearl Harbour.
Piloted by Hajimi Toyoshima, BII-124 was one of thirty six Zeros to launch from the Aircraft Carrier, Hiryu that day.
During the raid the plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire. Toyoshima tried to nurse the damaged plane back to the Hiryu but was forced to make a crash landing on Melville Island.
Captured by a local Aboriginal man, Toyoshima became the first Japanese POW captured on
Australian soil.
Transferred to Cowra POW Camp on the 8th of Jan 1943, he would later go on to plan and signal the start of the ‘Cowra Breakout’.
BII-124 was also involved in the attack on Pearl Harbour, however was not flown by Toyoshima on that occasion.
