Sopwith Camel - Eduard 1/48 - Showcase

If you had have asked me 12 months ago what the chances of me ever building a biplane were, my answer probably would have taken some time to deliver due to me waiting for the laughing to subside. The whole WW1 aircraft scene has never really been on much interest to me. That is not to say I don’t appreciate the effort and some of the stunning pieces or art I see being produced, it was just something that I never felt inspired to do myself. Maybe it was the intimidation of getting outside of my comfort zone…the fear of the unknown with the mysterious art of rigging ? I don’t know. I like all modelling but I’m essentially an armour modeller who dabbles in aircraft and a bit of everything else. However I am also a guy who likes a challenge and I do like to test myself in the hope I’ll learn something new… and that is when the Camel and I crossed paths.

The purchase of the kit came as almost a dare between a bunch of friends. We were looking to test ourselves and get out of our comfort zones, and the Sopwith Camel seemed to fit the bill. The 48th scale dual boxing from Eduard included all of the bits and pieces required to make a beautiful model from the box. A plethora of markings also meant we were spoiled for choice with paint schemes and options. What better opportunity would there be to try something new and expand the skills? And so the build began.

The scheme I had chosen was an all over azure blue and was flown by Capt. Francis Luxmoore of No.78(HD) Sqn RFC, Hornchurch, Great Britain in January of 1918.
