A brief history

zsu-23-4-shilkaThe ZSU-23-4 was the second half of the Soviet anti-aircraft umbrella, and designed to be used in conjunction with the SA-6 missile system. While the SA-6 system was designed to deal with high and medium atlitude targets, any enemy aircraft deciding to fly low and avoid the SA-6 would then find themselves in the radar and range of four rapid firing 23mm cannons of the ZSU-23-4. This was used to great effect during the Yom Kippur War resulting in a significant number of Israeli aircraft falling to its guns. Unsurprisingly, the ZSU-23 was also found to be extremely effective against lightly armoured surface targets.

This kit is the Orange Box/Cyber Hobby re-release of the old Dragaon ZSU-23-4M. Definitely not a state of the art kit and simplified in some areas, but still builds up reasonably in my opinion. The only modifications I made to the kit was a set of RB Model barrels which are heads and shoulders above the original kit parts, and I also replaced the string tow cables with ones I made from picture hanging wire.

The vehicle I chose is an Egyptian vehicle from the Yom Kippur War., which also fit in with the the 70’s theme at my IPMS NSW Meeting. A much more interesting scheme than the ones supplied in the box which were basically all green vehicles of several different nationalities, or one sand yellow vehicle.
